Learning about the world view of another culture through one’s classmate: Part II, Food

Having experienced some food from your partner's country (while in the company of your partner, please comment on this blogpost:

1. Explain what is typical or quintessential about the partner's culture.. Be specific. At least two specifics.

2. Notice any similarities between the two. Be as specific as you can. Try to find at least two similarities.

Your similarities will probably be the same. For the details of typical-ness, Koreans write what your American partner came up with, and Americans write what your Korean partner came up with.

My partner was Savannah and she brought pecan pie as an American food.
The pecan pie was typical about American food because first pecan, the walnut used in making the pie, is grown in California. Second, the pie is sweet and sugary like most of American food are. Third, the size of the pie was bigger than Korean food that I brought and American food are usually bigger in size.
The similarities between American and Korean food were that first both of them were sweet. Second, pecan pie was a pie and the food that I brought was also a pie. Also, both were bread kinds.

  2. My Partner for food project was David. The typical American food that David showed was Hershey's milk chocolate and the Korean food that I showed to David was Rice cracker.

Milk Chocolate was typical American food because although there are many different types of chocolate, it's the taste that Americans made. David explained to me that the milk chocolate was made by Americans. Also how Americans like sweet food, made the milk chocolate more typical for American food. He told me that the sweetness of the milk chocolate is loved by American people.

The Korean rice cracker is typical of Korean food because first it's made up of rice. Koreans eat rice for most of the meals. Also rice is important for Koreans. Second, some Kroeans like sweet food, and the rice cracker is sweet in some ways. It is not very sweet but it's sweet just enough for people so that a lot of people could enjoy them.

The similarities between the two food are that they are both sweet. second, they represent the culture well and they are both typicall food for the countries.

I had two partners : Laura and Christy. Both of them brought chocolate chip cookies for the project.
Chocolate chip cookie was typical because it was originated in the United States and it is still a common snack in America. Also, Laura said that Americans loves to add almonds and rasins to the cookie. Chocolate chip cookies are very common in Korea too. I enjoyed having some chocolate chip cookies during the conversation:).
I brought a rice cookie name 'snow cookie' as a typical Korean food. In Korea, we have a lot of Korean foods but it was not possible for me to bring it because I had 13hours of flight. So I decided to bring a traditional cookie. Korea's snacks are the same with Americans thesedays. However, about a 150years ago, we didn't had chocolates. So we made snacks out of rice. The cookie I brought was one of them and we still eat them a lot.
The similarities between American and Korean food we brought were : Both of the snacks were beloved during the old days and until now, they are still beloved. Both snacks are easy to make.

  5. The food that Nick presented me as a typical american food is NOVASCOTIA. This is latin word for New Scotland. It is a food thatis a bagel with cream cheese and smoked brined salmon on top. He said novascotia is a tyoical american food because it came from ashkenazic jews when they immigrated to United States and they lived at Newyork. So, this became acommonly eaten by Newyorkers as their breakfast.
The similarities of this food are that they are both made of wheat and that both of them are good for your body.

  6. I had two partners, and they were Christie and Heather. I brought in chocolate-chips raison-oatmeal cookies because they are basically made from the yummy things one finds in their cupboard when bored. I think that baking it a typical passtime of Amercian teenagers in general. Allow me to be sexist, but I think that girls and their mothers are the target cookie-makers in American culture. Christie also brough chocolate-chip cookies, and I think a few more reasons these are typical of American food are because A) They're quick and sweet, and Americans always want everything right away, and B) Cookies are made with simple products that could probably have been found on a farm in early America: flour, eggs, water, sugar, molasses.

Heather brought in a snow cookie, which is made of rice and sprinkled with sugar, for Christie and I to try. A snow cookie is typical of Korean food because it is made of rice, and that's something Koreans use a lot in their food. Also, since most of the snack food is the same as what we have here in America, it's typical because it is originally from Korea and has stayed in Korea. One more reason is that it was packaged. Because Heather is international, she had to bring the cookies all the way from Korea. If they hadn't been prepackaged, they wouldn't have made the flight or been allowed on the flight.

One of the similarities of the two foods should be pretty obvious. They are both cookies. Although Chirstie's and mine were chocolate chip and a lot heavier, Heather's food was cookies also. Another thing about them is that they are both snack foods, meaning that they are not a meal food. I eat cookies for meals sometimes when I'm home for holidays, but in general, I don't think that people eat just cookies for good, well-balanced meals everyday. Cookies are a fun thing, but they are not a staple food. Both the foods my group brought in were cookies, and a "sometimes treat".

  7. My partner for this food project of Elana.

I broght Korean chips made our of rice and my partner brought chocolate bar from the bookstore. My partner and I found out that the similarites between the Korean chips and chocolate was that both were sweet and both were junkfoods.

When I was choosing the food, I worried that my partner might not like it, but thankfully she did!

She told me that chocolate was typical American food because all americans eat it and also it is sweet and contains fair amount of fat(like many fastfood in America).

It was fun to share food from our country to a non-Korean. I also got to know more about my partner.

  8. My awesome partner that is Brianna brought delicious doritos chips.

    I brought Korean rice chips.

The reason why her food is typical is that its
salty and fattening and they are sold in all grocery markets and kids enjoy them for their addicting taste and there are all kinds of them such as ranch and so on which is also common in American cultures.

Our similarity is that they are both salty and very good for snacks.

  9. My partner for this food project was Emily Lee.

I brought Dorito chips, which are very common in america for their salty taste, addicting flavor, and are sold every you look.

Emily brought rice chips, which have a wonderful plain flavor but then as you continue to chew, there is a bite of flavor that keeps you wanting more. Emily tells me these chips are common in Korea because of the #1 main ingredient, rice. Rice is something in Korea that would basically compare to hamburgers in America, they eat it all the time! This would be commonly known as a snack food in korea in between meals, to keep the wonderful flavor of rice through their taste buds.

The similarity that both foods shared was the salty flavor, and many people enjoy them for their addicting flavor to snack on inbetween meals throughout the day

2.Notice any similarities between the two. Be as specific as you can. Try to find at least two similarities.

  11. Sung Kun Kim

    My partner was Demi.

I gave her a Korean rice cookie, which is traditional snack in Korea.

She brought a hamburger, which is actually the most typical food in America. Because, hamburger was born in America and is the food that most people eat everyday. There are also many hamburger restaurants that are famous, made in America. These restaurants have also come into Korea and are popular too.

The similarities for these foods are that they are both made in the principal food. Koreans eat a bowl of rice with other variety of side dishes. Americans have bread for breakfast or for other times too.

  12. Hey this is Christy and my partners were Laura and Heather. Laura and I had brought chocolate chip cookies. Laura's werw organic and had a lot of nuts and things in them and we that that was an American quality. In a lot of American food, people choose to add nuts and things to plain food to make it more tasteful.

I had brought just plain chocolate chip cookies with nothing special in them. We thought that these were typically American because it is a favorite pastime for little boys and girls and their mothers. It is something they do together for fun and Americans love sweet things like chocolate and sugar, which chocolate chip cookies contain both.

Heather brought a rice cake/cookie thing for her food. It came wrapped in plastic. We all thought that this was typical Korean food because a lot of Korean food contains rice. And this cake was made up of mostly rice and a little sugar and salt. It was really good. Heather also said that in Korea they have most of the same snacks we do here, so there isnt that much of a difference. But it was still nice to get a little inside to a typical Korean snack.

  13. My partner was Yeena, and I brought her bagels with cream cheese and nova lox. I thought this quintessential because of its common association with and popularity in New York, and because it is a example of an
"imported" cuisine, brought to America by Ashkenazic-Jewish people during the era of immigration.

Yeena brought me a typical Korean cookie, kaeseong yakwa. It is a sweet, delicious cookie that is normally baked, but can be deep-fried. It is quite sticky, and can be topped with various garnishes, ranging from nuts to berries. It is quintessential because it is a cookie eaten during certain Korean holidays, and was very popular during the 1990s.

We thought that these were similar because they were both baked, wheat based products, and they were both were somewhat healthy.

  14. I brought a hamburger and Sung Gun brought a type of Korear rice chip (i can't type the name because it's in korean). There are two ways in which this chip is typical of korean food: 1) it is made out of rice as is similar or most korean food and 2)It is origionally from Korea, has not traveled out of Korea. Two similarities in our foods were: 1)They are both typical casual foods to have at a "cook out" or "casual get together" and 2) They each have different flavors within them that you can't put your finger on.

    My partner was Ka Yeon

She gave me some Korean chips that were very sweet and I gave her a chocolate bar. Apparently this is a typical snack for Koreans. Since Koreans often eat more rice then Americans do and it's just very typical snack that's similar to other typical snacks the Koreans eat.

We figured the Korean chips and chocolate were similar in a few ways. Both snacks are very common for both Americans and Koreans to eat. Both are junk food and have plenty of calories.
